About the White Earth Tax Site

White Earth Investment Initiative's (WEII) involvement in free tax-preparation services began in 2004 as an extension of a local AARP tax service. It grew into an independent Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site in 2006, solely focused on White Earth Reservation. Today, the site principally operates at the Shooting Star Casino in Mahnomen, MN, the largest city on the White Earth Reservation.

In addition to providing free tax-preparation services, White Earth Investment Initiative is able to provide low-cost loans in anticipation of a taxpayer’s federal refund. Tax customers have the option to apply for a Community Development Bank Express Refund and Savings Loan, enabling tax customers to receive up to the lesser of 80 percent of their federal refund or $2,000 the next business day and the remaining refund in the amount of time it takes to receive the direct deposit from the Internal Revenue Service.

Qualified filers also can prepare and file their own return using myfreetaxes.com/whiteearth

Here's what some people have to say about the free tax services from WEII:

“I enjoy using this tax site simply because when I go, the tax preparers are always friendly, inviting and very nice.  Also, I always learn new things!”

            --Whitney, tax customer

“The tax service was great! It was the first year I have used it. The tax service was convenient, and the tax preparers were friendly and helpful. I heard about it because my friends and family use the service.”

            --Judy, tax customer

“When we help our community, it leads to open conversation on the street and in the homes. By becoming a tax volunteer, we can help begin that process. A friend had to talk me into it, but the rewards make it worth doing again. See you all next year!”

            --Bill, tax volunteer
