Pathways Home: A Native Homeownership Guide
Pathways Home: A Native Homeownership Guide was developed by the National Congress of American Indians in partnership with the National American Indian Housing Council and the Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation.
Course Details
Homebuyer education classes are provided year-round using the Pathways Home curriculum. Total class time is 8 1/2 hours, which is generally provided over two evenings. Dinner and a drawing also are part of the classes. All services are free.
Curriculum modules include:
• Exploring Homeownership
• Considering Mortgage-based Homeownership
• Budgeting for Homeownership and Calculating Affordability
• Evaluating Credit for Homeownership
• Finding a Home
• Applying for a Home Loan
• Meeting Your Financial Obligations
• Protecting Your Investment
Classroom instruction is provided by Rosy Hjermstad, a trained homebuyer educator. Participants who complete the class receive a certificate, which is required for certain home mortgage loans.
Housing Counseling Services
Each Pathways Home class includes a 30-minute, individualized financial counseling session, where participants review a copy of their credit report and, if necessary, create a plan for improving it. Financial and homeownership goals, and the need for related spending and savings plans, also are discussed in this session.
Free follow-up counseling is available to interested individuals.
